Enrollment or Enrolment: Implementing SEM in the Canadian Context

La Gestion Stratégique des Inscriptions

Susan Gottheil, Executive Director, Enrolment Management and Registrar

Mount Royal College

Clayton Smith, Vice-Provost, Students and Registrar

University of Windsor

This pre-conference workshop, aimed at both new and seasoned Canadian enrolment management practitioners and leaders, explores the emergence of SEM in Canada and how its application has both replicated and differed from practices in U.S.-based institutions.  Beginning with an exploration of shifts in the Canadian post-secondary landscape we will review SEM concepts and strategies and determine how and why we have approached SEM differently.  We will examine a number of key areas such as enrolment data and demographic analysis, international and domestic recruitment, accessibility for underrepresented groups, financial aid, admissions policies, academic success strategies, student support services, organizational structures, and assessment and accountability measures.  Best practices will be shared and participants will have an opportunity for dialogue and discussion of emerging issues.

Surviving Cataclysmic Change – Coping with the Aftermath of Katrina

Dr. Richard Whiteside

Dean, Strategic Enrolment Management, Royall & Company

Formerly Vice-President for Enrolment Management and Dean of Admission, Tulane University, New Orleans

Change can be incremental, sweeping or, on rare occasions, cataclysmic.  Hurricane Katrina struck the US Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005 and spawned cataclysmic changes at the colleges and universities in the region.  Institutional survival and recovery were entirely dependent upon the ability and willingness of university administrators and faculty to adopt new rules, new roles and untried methods of institutional management.  Surviving Cataclysmic Change - Coping With the Aftermath of Katrina describes what Tulane University did - and how we did it - in the face of the largest man-made disaster in the history of the United States.

Findings of the University of Saskatchewan Retention Study

Kelly McInnes, Registrar and Director of Academic Services and Financial Assistance

University of Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan conducted a comprehensive study in 2005 and 2006 of undergraduate student retention and graduation rates. The study consisted of both quantitative and qualitative data. A longitudinal analysis was completed of the registration and degree completion patterns of 10 years of student cohorts, representing an estimated 30,000 individuals. A phone survey of over 300+ voluntary leavers collected data on these students' use of services, views on the learning environment, levels of satisfaction, and key factors affecting their decision to stop attending the University. Focus groups on the teaching and learning environment provided retention-related findings as did in-depth interviews with a small group of students who had returned to their studies after a year away due to academic failure. This presentation provides an overview of the findings of the study along with a description of how these findings are guiding planning at the University of Saskatchewan.

New Product Development in Academe – Offering new programs to attract new students

Paul Dixon, Associate Vice-President and Registrar

Saint Mary’s University

As demographics change and institutions try to attract under-represented or new constituencies of students there is a need to rethink what we offer.  Those students are not here now because they don't see us having something they want.  Developing new programs or modifying existing ones is the responsibility of the faculty, deans and senate.  However, Enrolment Management personnel are the ones to recruit and admit students and administer the processes for scheduling courses, registering students and verifying degree completion.  They may also be held to account when enrolments increase or decrease more than anticipated.

New Product Development is key to success in all businesses.  In this session, we will present a brief primer on NPD strategies and tools and identify ways that Enrolment Management personnel may be able to stimulate or influence NPD within your institution.

Using Strategic Moments to Transform Service Delivery: Lessons Learned

Kelly McInnes, Registrar and Director of Academic Services and Financial Assistance

Tonya Wirchenko, Manager, Student Central

University of Saskatchewan

In 2001, the University of Saskatchewan made two major commitments that dramatically shifted the focus of activities on our campus from academic renewal to transforming the student experience.  A strategic moment arose, as these two commitments:

1  a review and re-organization of registrarial and student affairs roles and responsibilities; and

2  a new student information system culminated in the implementation of a one-stop student service center, involving both in-person and virtual components. This implementation has offered many opportunities for reflection and insight and we plan to highlight these lessons learned in our presentation.  Topics will include the 90-9-2 model of service delivery; how we effectively integrated our portal into this new model, tips on staffing requirements and considerations regarding spatial necessities.  Anyone considering a transformation of their service delivery or implementing a one-stop service model is encouraged to share in our experiences.

Adjust Your Sails or be Blown Off Course. Emerging Trends in Canadian Post Secondary Education

Ken Steele, co-founder and Senior Vice-President

Academica Group Inc.

Today, Canada's colleges and universities face an unprecedented pace of change in their political, demographic, technological, and competitive environment.  Populations are shifting. Expectations are rising.  Distinctions are blurring.  Long-held assumptions about our students, our programs, and our very purpose need to be reconsidered in face of inescapable shifts in the global economy and political climate. In this challenging context, "business as usual" is almost certain to leave an institution adrift, off course, or worse - sunk.  Plotting a strategic course, and successfully navigating it, demands greater vigilance and flexibility than ever.  Ken Steele will share his perspective on emerging trends in the higher education marketplace, and his conviction that we either draw inspiration from the winds of change, or get blown away.
