ARUCC is concerned by changes to the International Student Program

The ARUCC Board is deeply concerned by IRCC’s announcement about changes to the International Student Program by putting a cap on the number of study permits issued to international students accepted to study post-secondary education in Canada.

The recruitment and retention of students is foundational to the success of post-secondary institutions and the Canadian labour market. Their presence at our institutions reflects the diversity of thought, ideas, action and challenge we hope for in society. It shows our openness and contributes to our recognized and excellent teaching and harmonious relationships, which makes Canada a destination of choice.

We do welcome IRCC’s steps to ensure ethical practices are upheld in the sector, that students can find safe and secure housing, along with other exceptions to the policy, including the exclusion of current study permit holders. These changes will surely help to maintain the integrity of Canada’ International Student Program. However, this two-year cap will have an immediate impact on the world’s perception of Canada as a welcoming destination to study, not to mention damage to an already fiscally tight public post-secondary system. Students will choose to study elsewhere, leading to a profound and lasting impact on Canada’s Polytechniques, First People Institutions, Colleges and Universities.

As leaders who manage student data and systems, ARUCC members are positioned to be part of the solution to support international students as they transition to Canada, with lasting positive effects on the Canadian society. We look forward to continuing to work with IRCC and provincial ministries.

ARUCC/CACUSS Joint Conference, June 2018

News Release

The Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada (ARUCC) and the Canadian Association of College & University Student Services (CACUSS) are pleased to announce a joint conference to take place Sunday, June 17 through Wednesday, June 20, 2018. The conference will take place in Prince Edward Island at the PEI Convention Centre and Delta Prince Edward as the primary venues.

This is the first time these two organizations will formally come together to share common interest, learn from research and innovative practices, and to collaborate and build partnerships between members and external stakeholders. As travel and professional development budgets are tight, building cost efficiencies for both organizations will benefit our membership and our invited exhibitors and sponsors.

The Memorandum to host the joint conference was signed this month by ARUCC President Charmaine Hack of Ryerson University and CACUSS President Patricia Pardo of Mount Royal University.

The Program Committee will be made up of professional staff from universities and colleges across Canada, including local hosts from the University of Prince Edward Island. The theme of the 2018 conference will be announced in June 2017.

The Call for Proposals for educational sessions will open in November 2017 and registration will open in February 2018. General conference information will be available online in August 2017 at www.cacuss.ca and www.arucc.ca.

We look forward to this exciting collaborative venture in 2018 and hope to see you in PEI!.
