Survey on Preferred First Name on Diplomas
McGill is investigating whether to feature a student’s preferred first name (PFN - https://www.mcgill.ca/student-records/personal-information/address) on their diploma. Historically, our approach has been to allow the PFN except on external facing documents such as transcripts and diplomas, with the rationale that these documents should match the students’ legal name. However, many consider the diploma to be a commemorative public document and as such we are hearing from students that they feel strongly that the PFN should appear on their diploma. We would be so appreciative if you could take a few moments to tell us what your institution is doing around this question.
